As I did not keep a full journal of my gaming, I can only go by my available photos to recount my gaming experiences.

The middle part of my 2021 gaming included a good dose of WWII Rules and Scenarios. First among these games was a version of Bolt Action at Adler Gaming Shop. The rules set is called Bolt Action Firefight I believe. This is a smaller scale game where each figure has a command die instead of each squad. Here are a couple of photos from a BAF game in June of 2021:

I like BA Firefight. The smaller scale means the table set up can be smaller and more detailed. The game can also be quicker to play, making it a good gaming system for an evening between two friends. I would recommend the game to others.

Along the same lines of WWII Skirmish gaming, I also revived the excellent CROSSFIRE rules set. I have taken my 20mm British and Germans that I use for my Pegasus Bridge Scenario and mounted them individually for use with other rules such as Bolt Action or Chain of Command. Here are photos of a game I hosted in the summer of 2021 at the Northern Conspiracy:

Although designed as a two-player game, I find that CROSSFIRE is easily converted into a nice game for four players and can even take up to six players in a pinch. I believe that this game had four players that night. CROSSFIRE is one of my favorite set of wargame rules ever. You must approach the game as a real commander by planning for your movement using cover and concealment. Moving in the open once contact is made will almost always lead to heavy losses. One must also provide covering fire when moving in the face of the enemy, suppressing enemy forces before closing with them.

Here is another Bolt Action game that I played in at Adler Gaming Shop. Proprietor Gordon hosted a demonstration game - Chariots of Steel. This is set in the N. African Desert between Australian and Italian forces outside of Trobruk in 1941. I have played the scenario a couple of times and the game is challenging and fun for both sides. Gordon has tweaked the terrain, figures and vehicles over the years and developed a very nice looking game as well.

That's all for right now. Wow! It has been more than two years. Hard to believe all of that time has passed by. It has been a busy time in my wargame experiences as I have branched out into several new areas and worked on completing new projects in my normal gaming areas.

I think I will spend the next couple of months sharing some photos and recollections of games that I have been playing. I also will be reporting on my gaming experiences during 2023 on a much more regular basis.

I will begin by going back to January of 2021 and show some of the gaming/projects I undertook at that time:

The year began with a wonderful event (especially for the COVID era!). Our son married his sweetheart. The ceremony was small due to the pandemic. Her dress, his uniform and the simplicity of the event gave it a WWII era feeling that was incredible! We were all very happy!

Early in the year my gaming focus was on Blood Red Skies and Cruel Seas. The collections grew immensely!

Among my favorites were these He-162 Volksjaeger jet aircraft. They bring the "Jet" rule into BRS without the overwhelming force of the Me-262. During this time I also developed a movement and firing system that used hexes instead of the movement and firing sticks for the game. I feel that the hexes make movement and combat resolution much easier, but does not affect the feel of the game.

He-162 and Fw-190 on the gaming table.

F4U Corsairs of the Fleet Air Arm in their first game.

Also in early 2021 I worked very hard on my Cruel Seas navies. The goal is to complete an average of at least one figure/gaming piece per day over the year. I am also going to track my gaming on the same sheet. Given that we didn’t do much gaming in 2020, I think there is going to be a real incentive to be together so the game count should be way up there! And like any Wargames worth their salt, I have plenty of ‘unpainted reserves’ to be attended to.

Well, here’s hoping that the coming 365 days are more enjoyable than the past 365!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-59796605787587263242020-10-19T13:10:00.002-04:002021-01-02T08:37:54.984-05:00A Great WWI Aerial Game
Well, this is a great game! Wings of Glory (WW1) has really captured my imagination and it is pretty popular at our FLGS here in New Hampshire. I have gotten several new planes over the past week and one of them is the massive Zeppelin Staaken VI R. All of the Ares models are beautifully painted making them really fun to collect and use on the game table. For only

$16 - $20 for a single engine fighter and less than $30 for the larger single engine bombers, they are really affordable. Even the huge Zeppelin bombers at around $70 not that bad. Don't forget, for that price you are not only getting a wonderfully painted aircraft, but the decals are historically accurate and they well applied.

So, with the pandemic going on around here (were is it not going on?) I had to play a solo game to get my new Zeppelin on the game table. The scenario was simple - a Zeppelin moving in to bomb dockyards at a small Belgian city. Two American aircraft in the area (Rickenbacher in a SPAD XIII and Hartney in a Nieuport Ni. 28) spotted the German mammoth flying through their zone and move to intercept.

There were no German fighters available to escort the bomber so the defending gunners had to be really on their game.

Here are some photos of the game:

<img alt="Here is the end of the first turn. I clipped the wing tips to reflect the British aircraft. Apparently, the British Aircraft Carriers had less room between the flight deck and the hanger deck so the wing tips had to be removed so the folded wings fit into the hold.

The decals are for 1836 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Victorious, during Operation TUNGSTEN and are from my good friend, Kevin, at Miscellaneous Miniatures. Operation Tungsten was an air strike plan to attack the German battleship Tirpitz in her Norwegian base at Kaafjord. During the attack on 4 April, 1944, Fairey Barracuda dive bombers, escorted by Corsairs and Seafires from Victorious and HMS Furious conducted level and dive bombing attacks

I have not had the opportunity to gloss coat and flat coat the aircraft yet. I will post another photo when I get them totally complete.

Hope you like the photos. I am looking forward to trying them out on the gaming table!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-89723013020729113982020-09-07T22:46:00.000-04:002020-09-07T22:46:31.030-04:00Cruel Seas and Airbrush Tutorial
My Friend AJ of AJ’s Wargaming Blog came to visit yesterday to give me some pointers on airbrush techniques and maintenance. After the airbrush tutorial we had a game of Warlord’s Cruel Seas. It was a nail biting, good old fashioned Donnybrook between my Kriegsmarine force and AJ’s Royal Navy flotilla including an American Elco pressed into British service.

AJ gives you a blow-by-blow account and shows some game pics HERE. As AJ points out, the real winner was the English Channel as 7 out of the 10 boats/ships engaged were sunk during the battle!

I had forgotten how fun Cruel Seas can be. It is fast paced and there are many tactical decisions to make during a game. Each skipper has to think a turn or two ahead to make sure that he doesn’t run into his own boat or random shoal (a lesson I needed to re-learn a couple of times during this game!). Now that I have been reminded of how much fun this can be, I am looking forward to getting some additional boats painted up - AJ’s airbrush lessons will come in right handy - and look at the scenario list which is available on the Dock Office FB HomePage. If you are interested in torpedo boat actions of WWII, I would recommend that you join this FB page and checkout all of the resources available to help you run challenging scenarios or use a new type of boat. There are a lot of really great ideas out there for you to take advantage of.

It was a great bit of fun in an otherwise barren gaming season this spring and summer. Thanks to AJ for the great airbrush tips and for a really fun game. I look forward to the next game on the high seas!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-89646878375906156262020-04-05T11:36:00.001-04:002020-04-05T11:36:09.253-04:00Blood Red Skies Collection Continues to GrowHere are some photos of aircraft that I completed since the start of the COVID 19 situation. Not that many new 28mm figures, but I sure did get quite a few rebased (at least for me). The biggest new addition was the Blood Red Skies game system and related aircraft that I got painted. That will hopefully continue into the new year.

As I write this we are starting the fourth week of the COVID 19 Pandemic. Governments are warning that the next two weeks will be the most difficult - which is a very sobering statement given what we have already been through. I will try to continue to hobby and post what I am getting done. Hopefully, the activity will help both you and I mentally to get through this very trying time in our lives.

Over the past week I have had an opportunity to play two games of Iron Cross WWII. Both of them turned out very well.

The first game was at our monthly club game night hosted by my friend Charlie G. The battle was an infantry and armor assault by New Zealand and Indian forces against the town of Cassino being defended by Falschirmjagers.

Here are some photos of the game

The entire table. The British started on the near edge (Indian Infantry Company) and the right edge of the table (New Zealand Infantry Company and Armor Platoon). The Germans (three reduced Falschirmjager Infantry Companies) set up within the town.

The German command check the rules to see if they are short of MG42's!! The Machine Gun squads would definitely play a huge role in the defensive plan.

The Allies look forlorn as (l to r) Bob, John, Ralph and Phil [just off-camera] endure yet another round of MG fire into their vulnerable infantry. Just a couple of turns later they would be celebrating the victory as John moved up their armor and destroyed the German AT gun position.

The Allied attack developed slowly with the Indian units pushing in from the German left flank. The New Zealanders moved very slowly but kept some pressure on the German front. Being the first to attack, the Indians paid a heavy price as two machine gun squads tore into them. Just as the Indian attack started to falter, one of the New Zealand companies rushed the right front part of the German defense and made it into the cover of some ruins without any casualties. At the same time the Armor Platoon made a move up their right flank in an effort to assist the Indians. The bold move did cost the tankers one Sherman as they advanced, but they pressed the attack. Once the armor made it to the German flank, the Green Devils were not able to hit either of the remaining metal monsters with effective AT fire and the German AT gun position could not pivot to bring fire on the enemy. In the end the AT position was destroyed giving the Allies a minor victory. The win did cost the Allies dearly with almost two companies rendered combat ineffective and 1/3 of the armor force destroyed.

In the second game I had friends visit the house. Andrew, his son Thomas and their friend Shaun visited and I set up a German vs British scenario to let them play the game for the first time. Shaun and Thomas played with a couple of reinforced platoons against Andrew and I pushing British Commandos supported by a some armor assets. The forces were exactly equal in numbers and composition.

Here are some photos of the game in progress:
This was a pretty one-sided game as Shaun and Thomas handed Andrew and I a real drubbing. They had a better plan than we did; they moved better than we did; and they rolled their dice lights-out. We played along the long axis of the table - and that made it a much more of a slugging match. Not much room for maneuver. But the Germans made the most of the terrain and with a slow advance by us British, the game was one-sided.

I'd like to highlight the game mat that we used for this game. It is my new Killing Fields Static Grass mat that I just purchased. I love the way the looks and mixes in with my other terrain and buildings. If you like it, check out the Killing Field site HERE to get your own.

Club members and my friends really enjoy Iron Cross for our WWII skirmish/tactical gaming. It is fast paced and the ability to distribute command tokens and activate units in any way during a turn makes players fully engaged in the game at all times. I highly recommend that if you have an opportunity to play Iron Cross that you give it a try.
This was a concept test for his modifications to Volley & Bayonet in Wing/Battalion Scale. Ed has been working on this particular edit of the base rules for a couple of years now to use his incredible Austrian and Hungarian armies for mid-19th Century European conflicts. I think that his edits are right on the mark as the game seemed to flow well tactically and was a lot of fun to play.

During this game I faced off against fell Conspirator and blogger, AJ. AJ has written an excellent review of the game on his blog at this link (look for the entry "Battle of the Bloggers") so I will not go into the details of the game. I agree with everything that AJ has outlined in his post.
I did take a few of my own pics of the game in progress so here they are:
My pictures of the game cannot do justice to the beautiful figures that Ed has collected for this set of rules and period. I encourage everyone to visit Ed's Blog here and scroll down to see closeups of the armies and the many different conversions he has put together. Really an interesting read.

Many thanks to Ed for hosting such a great game and the work he has put into coming up with great rules for the period. Also, a big shoutout to AJ for being a great adversary across the game table. I look forward to playing the game again soon.

I have played a few sets of air combat games in the past and quite frankly I found most to be 'fiddly'.

I think the cliche of a game mechanic being 'elegant' is overused recently. But I have to say, that is the most appropriate word for BRS that I can think of as I play it. The combination of cards, pilot skill, boom chits and plane status is simple but gives a real feel for the descriptions I have read of air to air combat in WWII.

Here is a very good summary of the game mechanics that I found on the RPG.net website here. I think it really captures the essence of the system and I have to agree with most of his conclusions on the game. This is a relatively easy review, however, having been done in November, 2018. In December a full BRS Rulebook titled Ground Attack (yeah, I don't get it either but that is Warlord Games for you!) is due out. The new book will bring all rules together in one place - not three - and will incorporate all of the FAQ comments and addendums that have come out over the past couple of years. Sort of like a Version 2.0 of the rules without the fanfare. Ground Attack will also introduce rules for bombing (including dive-bombing) and strafing. These were major components of the air conflict in WWII and so it will be beneficial to have these aspects addressed with official rules.

Like all modern gaming systems, BRS has wealth of social media support including the Facebook Page called the Ready Room. If you use FB, look at the Ready Room and you will find some really neat ideas and supports for the game.

So one of the best parts of the game is that it has given me the opportunity to collect and paint new forces for my game room display! Here are a few of the planes I have painted and there are several more on the painting table as I write this so stand-by for more!
It arrived last week and I have to say that it is just as advertised. Here are some photos to show you what the mat looks like. I will comment more on the mat as I use it in games.

The mat is approximately 4' by 6' and although it had some ripples in it from being folded during delivery, it has relaxed well and there shouldn't be any issue with use in games.

The buildings are from Cresent Root. These are excellent pre-painted and assembled buildings that come ready to unpack and put on the table. The roads are from Deep Cut Studios. The straight sections of roads are as you see them in the photos. I trimmed the intersections and corner pieces to match the width of the straight sections more closely. I do not know the manufacturer of the hills.

Where did the summer go? I haven't been posting, but I have been pretty active on the hobby front. Getting new units painted up and doing some organizing of the hobby space. I will be posting several different items to get re-booted on the Blog. Plus, saying that I am going to post something helps motivate me to get the final bit of paint or decals on the model so I can photo and show you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-43194202476665182122019-07-27T23:16:00.002-04:002019-07-27T23:17:59.754-04:00Napoleon's Rules of War First Game of the 2nd HalfWell, it didn't take long to get the first game of the official 2nd half of the season in the record books. Played a game of Napoleon's Rules of War at a club game night the other night.

Great game put on by the rules designer - Charlie. The scenario was the battle of Bailen. I was one of the Spanish players commanding a division on the southern flank. In this battle, the Spanish had seized the town of Bailen with one force while two other forces moved in to help reinforce them. The two moving forces were also slowly encircling the French forces. While the Spaniards held the town, the French were trying to retake the town whlile preventing the Spanish from encircling them.

The forces were pretty equal in that the Spanish had superior numbers while the French had a slight advantage in quality.

Here are some photos of the game:

Overall, I had a really good time playing the game. Charlie is making some changes to his rules to help make them a bit easier to play. I think he is getting very close to finishing all of the edits for Version 2 of the rules.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-25986381639071391992019-07-20T12:31:00.001-04:002019-07-20T12:31:36.271-04:00Gaming for the 2nd Half of 2019As I was looking at my Hobby Activities for the Year (See Below), I noticed that so far in 2019 I have played the largest number of different rule sets than any other year I've been in the hobby - by far.

It just seems that I have been willing to go out on a limb and try new things (such as Star Wars ver 2, Warlords of Erehwon, and GW Kill Team). More so, it seems, then ever. I'm not really sure why this is, it just seems to all be piling up this year.

And I don't think that the trend will be slowing down either. Right now I am planning to play in a game of 'Fistful of Lead' later this month (I'm painting up some US Cavalry and Plains Infantry, complete with Gatling Gun for that game!). I also have planned to try a game of Black Ops from Osprey War-games sometimes later this summer. And right now I am reading another set of rules from Osprey, Rebels and Patriots, that I want to try out for that all elusive 'great' rules set for my War of 1812 skirmishes.

So many games, so little time! I really want to settle on a rules that I enjoy playing and that I have enough painted minis to do effective games and/or campaigns. There will always be one off games like the Fistful of Lead at my local hobby store, but I am talking about rules that I play enough to get comfortable with, or that I 'work harder' at so I can become somewhat proficient. I don't ever want to 'work' on game system to be a competitive player, but I would like to develop a feel for some game systems so I can game master a game or campaign and be do a pretty good job.

Right now I think that is the following games in the indicated period:

Napoleonics
Volley & Bayonet Wing Scale
Napoleon's Rules of War

War of 1812
Volley & Bayonet Wing Scale (Ed's Edits) - For battles
Rebels and Patriots - For skirmishes

WWII
Cruel Seas - Naval
Blood Red Skies - Air
Bolt Action - Skirmishes

Modern
???

Sci Fi and Fantasy
X-Wing ver 2
GW Kill Team
Warlords of Erehwon

Ten sets of rules plus at least one for modern gaming! Too many, I think. But these are all rules that I have tried out and I really have enjoyed each one of them for their own reasons. I think that I will have to consider them one-by-one and pair out the ones that I really don't want to play on a regular basis.

I have figures for most, if not all, of them so painting isn't really an issue - just have to finish off lead that I already have as I go along and then get stuff out to the table. Terrain is also not an issue as I have all types of terrain already made for all of the scales of figures that I have and for all of the time periods and settings (Europe, N. America, etc.).

I will update the blog as I play through these.

They rules have been used in our club for many years and they really have passed the test of time. We tweak them, but in many cases we return to the base rules when something different does not work out.

The scenario we played was the Hungarian Uprising against the Austrians in 1848. Ed has become quite the expert on the time period. He has researched and painted an extensive set of forces for both sides and the armies are a sight to behold! The scenario we played was challenging for both sides and ended up being well balanced.

I played one of the Hungarian divisional commanders. My forces consisted of three balanced brigades of two infantry battalions, a light infantry battalion and a squadron of cavalry. My mission was to defend two ridge lines in front of a town that we had to defend. If the Austrians could take our town under fire, we would lose the game. Large numbers of Austrians under George and Ralph attacked my positions and eventually wore my units down. I had to give ground but I was reinforced by another division similar to mine under Charlie and we ended up holding the line. Meanwhile, Byron entered the table on our right flank and crashed into Mike C. scattering his units and making for the Austrian town which were tasked with taking under fire. Due to Byron's ferocious attack, we ended up squeaking out a victory. Here are some photos of the game with Ed's great terrain and even better Hungarian and Austrian armies of 1848.
Our friend Gordon and his lovely bride, Denise, have moved their super hobby store from Western Manchester, NH to a new location in the great town of Merrimack, NH. The new diggs are a 1000% improvement over the Manchester location. Store size and location as well as parking, location, etc. are all vastly superior to the former store.

I stopped by the store this afternoon and got to host a game and play a game of Blood Red Skies. It was an excellent time!

It was a great game with one German bomber shot down for the loss of one Hurricane. The British were driven off, but a second German bomber was a 'probable' with an engine shot out and several crew down. The target would not get a bad pasting! So, as the British player I claim a moral victory even though I lost in game terms!

In both games I played a 105 point Rebel Alliance Squad consisting of two Z-95 Headhunters and one Y-Wing fighter/bomber.

I learned quite a bit about flying my ships around (and into) asteroids and space junk. Overall I believe I did a fair job of keeping my ships out of harms way and working on getting opponents' ships in my sights for a fleeting shot. It is a fast paced and fun game system to play.

In the first game, I paired up with AJ and his list of an Rz-1 A-Wing, and Wedge Antilles and his X-Wing. This gave us five small ships. We faced two players (Rob and Mike). Rob's list was simple - a Resistance Bomber fully tricked out and Mike flew a Scum and Villainy list of a YV-666 light freighter and a Kihraxz Fighter. We played a full 75-minutes in game time. The game was very close and came down to us losing two shields on one of our Z-95's which meant we lost 1/2 of a ship. We didn't cause a half-ship worth of damage to any of their ships so they won the game in a Technical decision.

Here are a couple of photos I took during my first game:

This second fight went well but I was so into preparing my movement dial and trying to decide who to shot next, I forgot to take any pictures! Oh well, maybe next time.

As always when playing with the guys in the club, it was a wonderful evening of leaving my worries behind, laughing and enjoying a great new game system! What a wonderful way to spend a Friday evening - if I'm not going to be with my lovely bride. I look forward to many more adventures in the X-Wing galaxies!
The scenario that I am running at the convention is based on the D-Day convoy crossing the English Channel on June 5, 1944.

Allied forces are American and British and include PT Boats, Fairmile D's, US Submarine Chasers, and a Corvette escorting some landing craft, a trawler and a tanker. The Allied objective is to move their convoy across the long table edge without being sunk.

German forces are based around 6 S-Boats (2 x S38 and 4 S100), a Minesweeper and a Flakship. The German objective is simply to sink as many Allied ships as possible.

Highest number of points is the winner - nice and simple for a convention game.

Here are some photos of the play test that I did at our local gaming store:
We learned several lessons to incorporate into my game next month. I will change the deployment of both sides in a couple of ways in an effort to speed up the first two turns of the game. The convoy also has to start the game a ways down the table edge if they expect to exit any boats off the table by the end of the game. Time will be limited in the convention setting.

Overall I think we should be able to get a good game in for participants. I will keep you posted on how the game goes!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-64530008328022118732019-04-06T21:06:00.000-04:002019-04-06T21:22:24.809-04:00Warlords of ErehwonHere are some pics of recent battles I have participated in from the new (for me at least) Warlords of Erehwon. I have an Elven Army that I have fought through 7 battles now and I have both won and lost with it. I really enjoy the game system - even if my sucky dice make it more than a challenge sometimes. One example is that I have, while attempting to cast spells with my Mage, changed myself into a frog a total of four times in seven games. Ask anyone who plays - that is a pretty high percentage!

My Elves are a pretty strong army and I have enjoyed putting the force together and have also enjoyed getting them on the table a fair number of times.

Now for the pics with some explanation of the force in the captions:
As you might be able to discern from these photos, my force is made up almost exclusively of pre-painted Mage Knight and D&D figures. I will get a few photos of my Undead Army on the blog in a future post.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-41721049740515137132019-03-06T07:35:00.000-05:002019-03-06T07:35:23.343-05:00Naval Gaming on the Cruel SeasHere are some pics of forces I am painting up for the new Game - Cruel Seas. It is a 1/300 scale naval game that I recently started playing. I am painting up two forces right now - a German Kriegsmarine Force and a British (Free French) Flotilla Force. I have continued my Free French WWII theme into this game system as I can be the add on to the many different British forces that people are painting up.
It is really the first Magic, Fantasy type wargame that I have played. I purchased the rule book on a whim when I realized that I might be able to outfit an army without any real painting and for well under $100! As far as wargames these days, it was almost too good to be true!
Although I am short and hobbit-like portly, I chose the very tall and elegant Elven force for my base army. The special rules for the Elves have a distinct French flavor. Haughty Disdain, Longbows, Spangly Armor and did I mention Haughty Disdain? The base force also includes a Giant Eagle which can be very helpful. I really like the way the army plays on the table. Sort of like the German SS in a WWII rules set - small units of very good troops with a lot of firepower! Playing against Gordon's Orcs/Goblins/whatever is like trying to stop the Russian Horde on the Eastern Front! It is quite a bit of fun.

I haven't taken many photos of the army yet. And I don't have any of it in action, but here are a couple of photos of my heavy units - my Dragon riding hero and the Allied Griffon. The Griffon has been involved in a couple of games and has done pretty well. The Dragon hero has been too expensive to field in a game to date because our points list has been limited. Looking forward to getting that rectified soon!
This Elven force now has an enemy to fight as I have organized an Undead Army out yet more ready-painted figures in Gordon's toy bin! I love these painted figures because you only have to do ~10 figures and you are ready to play a game! Looking forward to the first clash between these armies.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907679414792379857.post-32243562119691177092019-01-01T13:32:00.001-05:002019-01-01T13:32:10.090-05:002018 Hobby ActivitiesHere is the final list from 2018 for my hobby activities:
Not a bad year. I participated in a total of 20 games. Would have liked to done a few more, but life has a way of making other plans! Painting production has been pretty thin this year. I have a ton of stuff on the table and hopefully I can be more disciplined to complete the MANY projects that I have partially done.

Not too many gaming related goals for the coming year. I want to clean up all of the old figures and concentrate on the figure scales and periods that I have been doing the most of over the past couple of years. Mainly that will be mostly 28mm WWII Land, 20mm Modern Land and 28mm Napoleonics. I am also excited to see how the 1/300th WWII Naval (Cruel Seas) gaming goes as well as 1/200th WWII Aerial (Blood Red Skies). Terrain stuff is pretty well set and I think I will only have to work on a few remaining pieces to have pretty complete tables.

Going to make a big push to complete several of the forces that I already have in the never-ending queue. Really want to get them done so I can concentrate on gaming. I know we all have that same goal every year but I really want to get started on that for myself during 2019. We shall see what life brings around this year!

I wish all gamers the best in the coming year! May the dice always roll in your favor!

This campaign is being played with forces from the new Western Desert campaign book. We are using the Road to Victory campaign system with variable units. You can find a copy of the system book here.

In this campaign I am using my French forces (Foreign Legion, Senegalese, and vehicles) as the new Western Desert campaign book has formalized these forces. I have also started painting figures from the new British 8th Army box. These will be troops from the North African Infantry units in the 1st Free French Brigade. I am using these figures with British helmets, French Adrian helmets and wool comforter caps for headgear in this unit. I only took a couple of photos during the game, but here they are:

The Senegalese squad and a North African squad push the attack around the building complex that made up a major part of the terrain on our board.

In this system you build two squads of regular infantry of no more than 110 points each. These are commanded by a regular 2LT with two soldiers. The French also get a light howitzer as their national based unit. This is your base force for the campaign. In addition to the base force, you roll on tables to determine two additional units to add to your force.

For this round I had the two squads of infantry; the command element; a 75mm gun and spotter; an inexperienced infantry squad of Senegalese Tirallieurs; and a veteran infantry squad of Foreign Legionnaires. I also rolled for two transports/tows which I used to carry the FFL and to tow the howitzer.

The first game went pretty well for my troops. I ended up with a close victory against a well commanded DAK army run by my friend Patrick. After the game we rolled to determine the results of the units damaged or destroyed during the game and to find out what two new units would be added to our force. I ended up permanently losing one of my transports. I also improved the morale of my officer to Veteran and one of my regular base infantry squads to Veteran. Then I added a second Veteran infantry squad. The best roll, however, was when I added an SPAA vehicle to my force! I will now have a quad HMG on a truck added to the army! Should be interesting to see how effective this unit is against infantry.

I am going to use the Rubicon Russian Quad HMG on a truck mount. I know they are Maxim HMG's on the Rubicon model and the French used the naval mount from their ships on trucks in the desert, but I am going to bend history a little bit. I will provide photos as soon as the models are built and painted.

I will provide another game report as soon as I can get back to the campaign. Vive la France!
